Congratulations
Sue Corrigan of the Weekend Australian Magazine has won the Evangeline Ireland Award, presented for the most outstanding contribution of the year at the 2009 Yooralla Media Awards. The award was announced at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Thursday, December 3rd. Ms Corrigan, who also won the Best News Feature in the Print category with her article ‘The Struggle for Care’, was one of 15 finalists from print and broadcast media Australia-wide. The Yooralla Media Awards were created to recognise and reward media coverage that contributes to public awareness and understanding of disability. Dr Rhonda Galbally, AO Chair of the National People with Disabilities and Carer Council and a former CEO of the Australian Commission for the Future, said the aim of the awards is to break down the stereotypes that for too long have caused hardship to people with disabilities, their families and carers. “This initiative is intended to raise awareness and improve the accuracy, quality and integrity of reporting about people with a disability, their achievements and the issues they face,” she said.

Dr Galbally said the judges were unanimous in their decision to award Ms Corrigan the Evangeline Ireland Award. “Sue’s article raised the level of reporting on disabilities by highlighting the need for a National Disability Insurance Scheme. It helped to stimulate a long-overdue conversation on disability and public policy”. “I think Sue is a worthy recipient of the inaugural award and I want to congratulate her on this outstanding effort,” she said. |
